Costa Rica a small country with a wealth of animal and environmental diversity. If fact Costa Rica holds the record for having the highest amount of biodiversity of any country in the world! That is an impressive record considering that is also compared against countries that contain the Amazon and Congo Rainforests. From the Tropical Rainforests of the Lowlands to the Momtane Rainforests in the mountains, all the way to the rocky pacific coast you will find amazing species of all kinds around you.
The Strawberry Poison Dart Frog(Oophaga pumilio) is the most common dart frog species seen in Costa Rica. Their calls are plentiful and can be heard during rain or shine, dawn or dusk. These charismatic little amphibians use their bright colors to ward off predators. Aposematic coloration lets predators know that these frogs are poisonous and not a good choice for a meal.
The Pale-Billed Woodpecker(Campephilus guatemalensis). This large woodpecker species was making quite a rucus outisde my cabin at the Soltis Center.
The Collared Peccary(Pecari tajacu) was a common sight outside our cabins at La Selva. These relatives of pigs travel in large groups, rooting around for food. This species ranges all the way into the USA as well. Here in the south, they are more commonly referred to as Javelinas.
